08: How to Leave Your 9-5 Job and Become a Photographer

Samantha Joy Photography

Finding your passion in life is often a journey. For many of us, it starts with knowing what we don’t want that eventually leads us to what we do want. In my first episode with a guest, I invited my client-turned-friend Sam from Samantha Joy Photography to talk about her journey going from a corporate 9-5 job to pursuing photography full-time and building her business.

Sam talks about everything that led her to realizing what her passion was and what steps she took to actually pursue it. In two and a half years Sam has been able to go from dreaming to doing. I’m so damn proud of witnessing her journey as she turned into the business owner she is now and I’m so excited to share her story with you.

[04:04] Would You Rather? What a better way to get a good sense of who someone is than through a Would You Rather game.

[08:37] Sam has had the unique opportunity to witness both sides of the lens. Starting out from scratch as a photographer and developing her business to then also being a bride herself. What inspired her to take the leap and how did the journey begin?

[15:10] Sam talks about how she found out that photography was her passion and dream she wanted to pursue.

[17:58] How to overcome fear to get to your goals and what you actually want.

[22:24] That moment when you realize you deserve more in life and why the season you are in life right now is exactly where you are meant to be.

[26:04] What helped Sam propel her business and why taking small bite-sized steps is more important than only focusing on the greater goal.

[30:23] What it felt like when it was time for the new chapter in life to start.

[32:38] Hurdles and obstacles along the way including how we approach other people’s opinions about us and what we’re doing.

[39:32] Expectations vs. reality and why it’s what you make of it.

[43:19] Talking about being on the other side of the lens as a bride and what she learned from it to then implement into her own approach to photography.

[53:06] Wedding photos that stood out to her and some advice for everyone who doesn’t want to miss an important moment to document.
